Is there any 'mileage' in connecting to a DSpace repository though the Moodle WebDAV repository interface? Perhaps, not as sophisticated/capable as a REST API, but it may just work.
I don't have any experience of DSpace, but this works for some other repositories (Alfresco, KnowledgeTree, ownCloud) with WebDAV interfaces.
