Guest access does not work

Using Moodle 2.1.2 and I can't seem to enable guest access correctly for a specific course.

  • The course's category is currently hidden but the course is available and its displays on regular students' MyMoodle page correctly.
  • I have enabled guest access for the course and turned on the guest enrollment plugin for the course
  • In Site -> Users -> Permissions -> User policies I have "auto-login guests" turned "on".

When I go to a direct course URL such as http://my.moodle.instance/course/view.php?id=23 there are two problems:

  1. I am not auto-logged in.  Instead I am presented with the regular Moodle login page.
  2. Clicking the "Login as guest" button only returns a "Invalid login, please try again" error message.

I believe I've done everything correctly so I don't understand why it's not working.

I'm having the same problem and worked through almost everything related to Guest access for Moodle. Would love to get this corrected. We're running Moodle 2.2.
