Which of these methods work on Moodle Docs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Footnotes ? Are there any examples? My quick tests were not really helpful.

A solution like the ref tag would also be very useful for external links. I would go for the following system:

In the text itself "anchors" are placed next to the term which needs an external reference.
e.g. Ubuntu Server[1] LTS ....
(only [1] is a hyperlink, preferably in superscript, which takes one to the line at the bottom of the page)

...

[1] Ubuntu Server http://www.ubuntu.com/business/server/overview
(only the URL in the above line is an hyperlink pointing to what it stands).

Thanks to this post http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=196748#p859193 got it clarified.

The ref and references tags do exactly this, but not on Moodle Docs. Tested them on the original wikipedia.org and work as documented here http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php.

Not terribly important.
