I have just been startled to read that those attending the next Ireland/UK Moodlemoot in Dublin will be charged a conference fee of well over 200 euros. And that's without accommodation. What has happened to the Moodle community? Moodle is open-source, community software developed philanthropically. When I last attended a UK Moodlemoot (some years ago, admittedly) it was regarded as an academic event hosted by a university with no intention of making a financial gain. Those attending the 2012 event in Dublin are invited to submit papers, but are not offered payment for presenting them, which is as it should be. I believe that a Moodlemoot should be a non-profit, community event. I know, of course, that it costs money to run a Moodlemoot and that attendees must pay something to cover the costs. But this Moodlemoot seems to cost far more than it should. Underemployed freelancers are likely to be deterred.
