Thanks for the helpful comments. Turns out we had been having some problems with AJAX and javascript, so the site admin had turned them off to troubleshoot then forgot to turn them back on. They're now on, and I love how easy it's been. In Firefox, I can actually tab from one rating button to the next, making reading and rating very efficient.
