I would like to create a site that helps people in my community organise events.

The site will allow users to login enter there event in to the calendar with location and time or login and veiw the calendar so that event organisers can avoid planning events on the same day as other organisers. I would need users to be able to login onlne and register to the site and edit their events but not other users.

I though maybe using moodle would be a good idea allowing some development in other areas (Posting event documentation)

Can anyone advise me if moodle is the right tool for this and how easy will it be for me to setup. I don’t know how popular it will be so really cant tell user amount. I do know that a lot of event organisers complain of clashing events. I have a hosting package already.. not sure what to do next.

How about Google Calendar? That seems to do all the things you would need it to do.

Moodle'ms calendar isn't very smart in that respect. However, there is a plugin called Scheduler that might be able to do what you're after. Check it out here:

Cheers,

Guido

And I was also thinking if there could be a way that we can make Moodle a social calendar that works better than Google calendar ...

Hi Ibrahim,

There is a way: It's called the Scheduler module:

http://docs.moodle.org/20/en/Scheduler_module

http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=mod_scheduler

I haven't tried it myself but it may be better than the standard calendar. The Moodle Calendar isn't smart in that it doesn't recognise if there are overlaps (i.e. double-bookings). I do like the ability to export to iCal though, that's very handy.
