I have quizzes built in my LMS.  Everything was working fine until today.  Now students are getting a message that they must enroll in the course before attempting the quiz.

As Admin, when I click on Results they are all shown but there is a note at the top of the screen saying "No students enrolled in this course yet." 

Somehow there is a disconnect between being assigned a student role in the quiz and Moodle recognizing them as being enrolled.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think it has something to do with the way you enrolled the students. They could be assigned roles as students, but not as participants of a course , for example due to default site role.

For the sake of experiment, you could try to manually enrol one student in the course, ask the student to take the quiz and see the gradebook, not the quiz results. The student should be in the gradebook if everything works fine.
