Hide specific courses on profile

Hi,

I know it's possible to hide the entire course list in user profiles - but I've been asked if we can hide a few specific courses focused on supporting students with confidential issues so other users can't see they are members of that course in the personal profile.

Is there any way (including working hacks) of filtering the displayed list to flag specific courses so they're either not displayed at all or only displayed to the enrolled student when logged in?

This is more a random thought that I/you would need to investigate. Can you create a different type of student role for assigning students to these confidential courses. The bit I don't know off-hand is what causes the course to be displayed in the list. If it is a capability then that's the answer (or it would be a trivial hack).

I have to say that this sort of thing makes me nervous. Moodle was never meant for hiding stuff and you can find yourself in a real mess. Perhaps Moodle is not the answer or you should consider setting up a parallel Moodle for these courses and users that is really locked down.

Interesting idea. There isn't anything specific in the role capabilities - but it did get me thinking that if the courses were hidden by default and the default role for those enrolled had permissions to view hidden that might work - I could then just create a link or menu item linking to the courses - but then need to figure out how to make them enrollable while hidden. Hmm...

I think I'm back to a tweak to the hiddenuserfields setting to allow you to hide who is enrolled from course settings level. I can think of a number of areas where that would be desireable depending on how a site is being used - online counselling, information pages on stress, some student societies (eg those likely to encounter prejudice & abuse). Perhaps you're right that Moodle isn't the best platform for such content, but functionally it does everything desired - except we can't hide who is on a course without hiding all courses.

I too am interested in your request to hide specific courses because of sensitive courses.

Did you ever get to resolve this issue?

Hi,

Just to say I never quite resolved this as a custom setting - so just hid all enrolments by default on the profile page. Students can still see their own courses under 'my courses' but not what other students have taken.

As a bonus I have to say it reduced number of requests from students to be removed from open courses they'd browsed into once and never used again (I set course list to display frequently used content at the top).
