Hello Moodle Community,
I just wanted to post this in a new topic because the topic that this was originally posted under has been dead since 2008 so I'm afraid no one will benefit from the work I have done because no one will be able to find it!
Anyways, I have modified a community submitted grade report (which is basically just another page in the gradebook) that was originally created by Vlas Voloshin that was designed to sync between hidden assignments and grade items. With a little bit of work I managed to modify it to make it much more user friendly and it has become quite a nice new feature addition to the gradebook in moodle 1.9.
The reason why I needed this feature was to make it easy on teachers who wanted to reuse their assignments that were posted the previous year. With this new grade report a teacher can easily hide all pre-existing grade items with a single click and then unhide them on by one as needed (or vice versa).

To install, simply extract the report_hideunhidegradeitems.tar.gz file to your moodle root directory using this command:
tar xzf report_hideunhidegradeitems.tar.gz
Then login as an administrator and click on 'Notifications' to update the database.
