My students seem to have problems with the hide/show weeks icons for weeks/topics. Frequently a student manages to accidently hide all weeks except one and then cannot work out how to get them back. In fact, they cannot work out what they have done at all.
It would be great if the icons were a little more obvious than the current white boxes. Would it be possible to have them changed to + and - signs? Also, a message saying something like 'all weeks have been hidden except current' would also be useful.
I got the + and - signs from the new block control in 1.5 and this got me thinking. Would it be possible to have the same dynamic control over hiding / showing weeks the same way that the new blocks work? Again a show all and hide all but current option would be great but the dynamic method would mean no page loads! Also, you would have the new option to be able to control which weeks you wanted, such as this and the previous two weeks IYSWIM.
See it in action here: http://learn.humboldt.edu/course/view.php?id=10&topic=1 (login as guest), click the titles in the "Navigation Bar" to move between topic blocks.
It's in CVS/contrib if you'd like to try it out.
I have seen the nav block and used it on our server and also would like something like this as standard. The problem is the kids simply do not read the screen .
They seem to just focus upon the middle bit where the weeks are. This is great as this is where the content is but problematic as a lot of useful stuff is contained in the blocks. I suspect things will improve a little when they can hide block content (as there will be less to look at on the screen). Also I noticed another thread just now about changing default blocks which would be useful.
Is it correct that nav14 does show all the sections, even when I trim it back to 1o sections afterwards? Can I change this?
(I keep some sections hidden /stand by)
I like the nav bar concept. I installed the block_nav.php as moodle/block/nav/block_nav.php. The install showed "nav" as having installed correctly. It does not show up in add block. Did I do it wrong? How do I get it to show?
It only works in weekly or topics format, though, thus not on the front page or social. If you have some other custom course format, you (or we) would have to add it to the code.
Though IIRC Gustav is using it on his front page at York, you'll have to ask him how he did that.
It also may not work yet in 1.5, we or Gustav--he added the changes for 1.4.3--will be updating it once 1.5 gets stable enough to code against.
Thanks for the patient and kind assistance!
I'm having a problem with installing the nav block. I have the zip file, I loaded into the block folder it shows up after extracting it. When I go to admin.....it says it cannot be read. Any ideas about this.....
Thanks Diane.....I love the look of the block....I hope I can get it to work
They will eventually be themeable too, but let's have some mockups of DEFAULT icons and talk about them.
Ok, I have done a little mock up. Things to consider to open the discussion further:
- New textual link to display hidden weeks (also informs students that weeks are hidden!)
- The new icon on the right controls show / hide the way the new
blocks work without refresh (Content is hidden but date / title remain)
- New title label by default added to each week. Works like week 0, hidden if not used.
- Week is now displayed by itself (hide others) by clicking on either the week number on the left and/or the date/title of the week block
Things not included to consider:
- Textual link below week 0 to show only current week when all weeks are displayed
- A method of minimising all weeks except current. I.E. the same as clicking all the + signs. Weeks other than current would just show title / date.
BTW, what is the process actually called when the new blocks can be hidden by clicking the + sign? Minimise doesn't seem to cover it and they aren't hidden fully.
Expandable / collapsible weeks / topics
I take the point that perhaps a - should also be used along with the + icon depending upon status but I was trying to keep it consistent with new blocks which IIRC only uses a + for both states.
Also, as this we not answered elsewhere and I am kinda on the subject, how do people feel about a moveable 'add blocks' dropdown? See here.
And another thing (), the dropdown list seems to be sorted by order of install rather than the more logical alphabetical order.
I think that's it!
Thanks for your time
Have you had an opportunity to see,
New Course Format: "G8Moodle"
It has some similarity to the layout you are describing although it offers some additional functionality.
In that case you need a course format without the special section zero.
The advantage is that all the other sections are not even sent to the browser (so the page loads fast). I don't want to throw that away, and I think using the +/- icons for this feature is at odds with how it works on the blocks.
The little work I have done exploring raising boys' achievement is that they prefer to see the whole picture. Where they have been and where they are going which is. This is pretty much all of my classes use the all weeks view. The problem is the screen is too busy. Having the opportunity to collapse unused weeks and restore at whim, without lots of refreshed sounds like a good idea to me.
Also, When I first started moodling I wanted complete control over what the kids see but now I am starting to lean to the idea that they have control as this would provide them with a little more ownership. They could also match the environment to their preferred interface rather than mine!
This attachment doesn't hit the mark completely in terms of instant understanding but I feel it has more meaning than the current white box. Obviously somebody with a little talent would have to redraw these.
Edit: Ummmmm ...... Obviously they wouldn't need to be quite as large!
As for language link I was refering to a few things.
Yes ALT tags would also help.
I think I also suggested if only one section was available then above this section a link would say (in your prefered language) something like "click here to show all 7 weeks". If all sections are showing then under week 0 you could have "click here to show current week only"
I also thought at the bottom of only one week showing you could have a "pervious" text link at the left of the drop down box and a next at the right of the bottom drop down box.
