When I set the default language for the site to be English(en_us) I get the following message about my 'Book' modules:
ERROR: No lang file (/var/www/sites/frostyacres.com/moodle/www/lang/en/book.php)!
Everything works fine using English (en) language.
Just copy the book lang file to your lang/en_us folder.

I did what you said and -- yup -- the book lang file in the en_us folder worked!

All the language files are included in the book.zip file, you should see them after unzipping and reviewing the directory (there's a lang subdirectory.) Hope that helps.
