Hooray, it's all come together.
- Go to your moodle directory and then 'lib'
- Select 'htaccess'
- Move the file to the directory 'moodle' (up one)
- rename the file from 'htaccess' to '.htaccess'
- keep all the default settings that are inside the file
- go to your moodle site through your web browser and check the page appears
OK, so all those instructions were in the file itself but it took knowing that the file was there to fix it.
