Turning off emoticon filter in a quiz doesn't stop them from being displayed

My apologies if this has been covered somewhere here in the forums and I missed it but...

I am trying to deactivate the emoticon filter in a quiz so that the following doesn't display as a thumbs down emoticon a but even though I turn off the filter from the quiz filter settings, the emoticon is still displayed.

I'm using Moodle 2.0.2+

P.S. I see that the emoticon displayed in my post above. I'm trying to give students the option between "a" or "an" using the traditional method by typing "a" followed by a slash / and an "n".

Also, not sure if it matters but I'm using this in a short answer question at the moment.

I'm still using 1.9 so I'm not 100% sure it's still in the same place in 2.0 but if you go to Site Admin > Appearance > HTML Editor, down at the bottom it will show all the combinations that turn into emoticons. To remove the emoticon, just delete it from both right and left side of list. See also Moodle Docs on issue.

No suggestions from a technical standpoint, but if the filters won't cooperate, how about using "a/an"?

The fact that turning off certain filters in the quiz does not work is MDL-25885 / MDL-24996. Sorry I have not had time to fix that yet.

In Moodle 2.x, you can configure emoticons at Admin -> Appearance -> HTML settings.

These bugs (turning filters OFF) is not yet fixed in Moodle 2.0.x (current stable version).

They are fixed in Moodle 2.1 beta.

It's strange that bugs should be fixed in development version before being fixed in stable one...

Not at all. If fixing a bug involves major risky changes, it is a good idea to add it to the development version, so that anything serious that is broken by the 'fix' can be flushed out while only inconveniencing developers.

Once there is a degree of confidence that the fix is right, one can make a much more informed decision about whether the fix is feasible to add to the stable version(s) affected.

Thanks everyone,

I didn't want to shut of emoticons site wide so I just used a different scheme a/an instead for now. Looking forward to the filter being fixed but it's not a make or break situation for me and I doubt it is for others so I understand why it would be on the back burner.
