Good Morning Don - I asked the same question awhile ago and this worked for me. I wanted only the final grade to be a letter grade - after creating the letter scale for the gradebook - go into gradebook and click on Settings and change the grade display type to Real. Now go to Categories and items and click on the edit icon next to the course name. Click the 'Show Advance Button' and get the grade display type to letter. That will give you the letter grade for the course total. Also to see the letter grade turn off editing. All of the numbers remain in the gradebook - so the details on all the graded items remain.
