I've managed to use the Accordion Resource successfully without any side-effects on my site: http://scm.moodleace.com to reduce the scroll of death. If you want to see a demo, you can check this discussion out:

A caveat: be careful with updating your core files with this hack. The road to sweet success in Moodle administration is fraught with danger. The key is to backup all files that will be updated by a hack. Then you will be okay.
When used with the "Collapsible Topics" format, it makes for quite a nice level of abstraction in reducing clutter in a Moodle Course, especially one where the vertical activities go on and on downwards.
