Hi,

The general developer forum seems to cover a wide variety of areas and I find can be too broad when wanting information on specific areas.  Could it be broken up into development areas with the people who 'lead' that area as moderators?

Regards,

Gareth

Well, what is your suggestion for how it could be subdivided?

A lot of the obvious forums already exist: Theme, Database, Usability, Accessibility, Quiz, ... all the other core module ..., Backup and restore, Blocks, Filters, ...

Dear Tim,

Oh I was thinking along the lines that there is actually a distinction between the development of components and their usage.  And that most forums struturally appear to be aimed at the latter and not when there is a specific issue with how a certain technology has been used within the core, such as AJAX, YUI... most of the 'lib' folder.

So questions in the 'General developer forum' get lost in the 'fog of war' as they could be categorised further and answered by people who have specific skills in these specialist areas.

Regards,

Gareth

Is it possible (or desirable) to try to develop functionality without discussing it with potential users?

Also, the general developer forum seems to have fewer than 10 threads active at any time. That is not very many.

Dear Tim,

Good point, I think that the discussion about potential functionality should be visible to users, however, the technical detail of how that functionality is implemented should be left out as perhaps it is offputting and confusing to those not familiar with the jargon.

With only 10 concurrent threads I can see how there is not so much potentially going on to justify the effort of breaking it apart.  But, I was thinking along the lines of ease of searching through older posts to see if a question had already been answered.  Or could 'tagging' be introduced to make this functionality easier?

The Moodle Documents has a wealth of information, however, what you want is sometimes not there and often the question is very specific to a technology, therefore categorisation would enable better targetting of questions to the persons in the technical subject area who understand it the most.

Cheers,

Gareth

Hi Gareth,

For a more targeted search for discussions and postings in the Moodle forums you might try one of the Firefox search plugins available at http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html?name=moodle&skipcache=yes

Dear Frank,

The plugin is client side and therefore would have to be used by everybody who uses the forum to attain the same functionality.

Surely, it is desireable that users post new topics that have not been covered before in depth in order to reduce duplication and increase consistency in the answers given instead of multiple answers over time for the same technolgical area.

I think it should be a matter of improving the overall quality and functionality of the forums for all that needs to be addressed by the increase in granularity I suggest.

Regards,

Gareth
