I decided in the absence of any response from the forum concerning the SQL errors to check out the status of the PHP5 installation on my fresh new Ubuntu machine where I was attempting to run the Moodle installation.
I run sudo apt-get install php5-gd which advised me that I had the most up to date package installed however also advised "the following packages were automatically installed (I don't know when) but are no longer needed. Use apt-get autoremove. I took the advice and run apt-get autoremove and retried the moodle install from local host and it now accepted the SQL credentials it previously rejected. I was alble to proceed to completion of the moodle installation. This was a major breakthrough after 3 and a hald weeks of effort although I am under no illusions that I will not have significent challenges getting it to co host on the other PC running Mythweb. One step at a time.
I hope my report back concerning the MYSQL error is of assistance to other people installing who might encounter the this circumstance.
