I'm trying to write a question within a Calculated Multichoice Question. The question formats correctly using the Tex notation $$ a^{x}$$ • $$a^{y} $$

However, within the answer choices, I cannot seem to get TeX to display the added {x} and {y} wildcards correctly. The first wildcard {x} displays as an exponent, but the second digit is NOT an exponent.

The following TeX notation is what I used: $$ a^{={x}+{y}} $$

Any variation of this in which I place more parentheses or braces in an effort to combine the two digits as one exponent either gives me an "Illegal formula syntax" error or displays the first parenthesis as the exponent and everything else back as non-exponent text.

Am I missing something, or is it impossible to do the calculation within the TeX notation?
