thanks very much for that - i was able to find the permission over-rides and make changes (2.0 BTW), and this was good to know and has actually clarified in my mind the concept of course settings.
However, teachers still can't successfully add assignments as there is a 'page not found' error which i will need to speak to the Tech people about.
