When we use the open/close setting for a quiz, Moodle displays the quiz on the Front Page. How can we stop this action?

In Moodle 2.0, you can use the new conditional availability feature to hide the link on the course page outside certain dates.
It is considered a feature that before the open date, the student can see the link ot the quiz, and click on it to read the introduction/rubric.
Unfortunately, we are still using 1.9+ and we don't want them doing the quizz before they've read the assignment.
Sure, but they can't acutally do the quiz before the open date. They can only see that it exists. How much of a problem is that?
