I need to have a set of courses that are created with a standard template. Is a new course format a good way to accomlish that? I have also considered backing up the template and restoring each time a course is created, but this creates other issues I want to avoid. The best solution is to have the template in place upon creation.
I think it depends on the template format that you are trying to achieve. Course formats simply manipulate the 'layout' of the stored activites / resources. If you want a certain look, then 'yes' if you want activities / resources precreated then 'no'.
My requirement is that when a student logs in he/she should be able to view the list of courses they have been enrolled into and also the schedule of their classes which is saved as a pdf file. So, what needs to be done so that the student views both the course list as well as schedule for their semester once they login to their account?
It sounds like you do not need a course format, but 'MyMoodle' instead ... http://docs.moodle.org/en/My_Moodle - I'm not sure completely how to have the pdf but if you give them a link to it, then they could put in their own area using http://docs.moodle.org/en/My_private_files_block or you could somehow customise the code in MyMoodle to make a link based upon their Moodle Id or some other data stored about them?
I've been looking for something similar to what you described, and so far I didn't find anything. Gareth points out part of the solution, enabeling MyMoodle... but that is only to show the courses that you are enrolled in, and only admins see all courses available (it is a "must have" in large organizations).
What I am looking for is a way to push a template during auto-creation of courses through LDAP. This is partially possible, but only for settings like start date, visible, upload size etc. but not for what blocks to display and where, or info already populated (such us configurated pages that all courses must have). It is not practical for us to backup and restore 600 times a course to get some stuff in the right place...
It seems to me that it has to be possible to do this, but I don't know how! Any ideas?
