Missing "Assign roles" link in the course administration block

We recently upgraded to Moodle 2 which led to a few problems. For some reason, users cannot enrol themselves any more. They can create new accounts, however, when clicking on an existing course there is the message:

"You can not enrol yourself in this course." Why could that be?

If I try to manually enrol users, I don't find, how to do it. According to documentation I should just click the "Assign roles" link in the course administration block. However, there is no such link (see screen shot).

I'd be very grateful for any help!

There is no "assign roles" link in Moodle 2.0 - you click on "enrolled users" and choose them from there. Also check that in site admin>plugins>enrolment>manage enrolment plugins you have self enrolment enabled and that is enabled in enrolment methods in your course.
