Nothing can compete with live education in groups, so stick to model that you organise your education around the local paramedic. Combine this with a supporting Moodle and you get some extra's.

Then setting up a first aid course:

  • Brasil, so it should be in Portuguese?
  • Can they all read or should it be visualised?
  • Do you wish you a real course with start date and end date? choose weekview
  • Have the children their own pace? choose the topicview
  • Moodle has three colums, focus now on the central column: you could consider it as a row of cards, called "sections"
  • the first card is always on the screen: put their your general info
  • Find a picturebook about first aid
  • take the chapters as starting point: they become the topic cards: use the title-option of the "sections" (cards) to write down the working title of that chapter
  • big chapter? consider the use of two cards for that chapter
  • not for Brasil relevant chapter? skip it or replace it with your own text + pictiures
  • Now start first with the content
  • for each chapter: (re)write the text of the chapter
  • scan the pictures and past them in Word
  • make of each chapter a PDF and hang it behind a hyperlink on that chapter card (section)
  • Now a new choice: do the children work alone or do you want them to become a team
  • If you choose the personal approach you could bring in simple m.c-tests to rehearse the readings, before the reading a simple opinion-test (with common-sense misunderstandings about medics/first aid) to motivate the student (bring in medical instuction-films...... considering bandwith? replace them with frozen scenes + texts..?)
  • You could give every student a journal for personal reflections on the course and promiss teacher feedback (Would be nice to give the local paramedic the role of personal coach here)
  • for group building you could create forums in very different ways (not only the classic model of a forum!!) study the options of forum and fantasise about unusal use..
  • Make them - the students - active in the course: let them bring in new information about the local situation: they are the slum-experts! (use open assignement and/or forum) let them help to find solutions for these problems, teach them approaches... (again with assignments and or forums, to they become active problem solvers..) Let them discuss which each other AND WITH THE PARAMEDIC about the proposed solutions and reflect on the choices etc...

for a start? (Sorry, I have to go now to the countrysite on countryside: without internet, they call it vacation.)
