I'd recommend using the "courses" block which will indicate the various "other" courses your student is enrolled in.  This can be placed on the homepage and in the individual courses.

Also, I'd recommend turning "activity logs" on in the course settings.  This will give your student a chance to review past logs and what work is finished/unfinished.
