Not tried the hub plugin yet, but just a thought in the session timeout problem... Try setting a unique value for cookie prefix in both moodle installations if they're on the same server (ie. different value for each installation). Multiple Moodles running on the same server usually require it, and as the hub is essentially just another Moodle it might be worth a try.
