Hi , I am new to this but have been dabbling with an old server setup using windows as the server option.

I would like to use the a free OS but I am not sure which one to choose and what hardware i should put it on. Our user base will be about 400 users per server. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mark J

Hi

Don't know about Windows but with Linux you can do wonders on old machines. See that there is plenty of RAM, say over 1 GB. See http://docs.moodle.org/en/Installing_Moodle#Hardware

There is no recommended Linux distribution, take the one you know well. See http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=161040

Did you check the docs: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=596 and run a search on this forum.

Hi Alan

Good to know that your school uses Skole Linux as the PC environment. I had a look at it long ago and was impressed by the number of technogies they've put together into a 'turn-key' solution http://www.slx.no/product#out_of_the_box LAMP is nothing compared to the LDAP, LTSP, etc. you'll find configured in Skole Linux.

It also means that Skole could be an overkill for the OP, since he is looking for a LAMP-server. I didn't know that Skole includes a Moodle instance though.

P.S. I recommended your posting to a couple of people in Kanton Zürich, who work with LTSP - http://www.complino.ch/ for example.
