Hi, one of our clients have very old version of moodle and they wanted it to be upgraded to latest version. I was suggested before in forums here that I should first upgrade to 1.6.x and then to 1.9
I have tried upgrading to 1.6.9 (that was the oldest version available for download on moodle site) and it started giving errors from one of the quiz table, column already exist (that column didn't existed in the old 1.3.3 version), i delete the column then the series of error started - column already exist, table already exist and finally upgrade failed. I tried deleting the columns and tables it was complaining about but the problem never ended, if one error was fixed another one popped up. There is no documentation available for upgrading from 1.3.3 anywhere. I restored the code and database and tried many times again, it failed every time.
I have followed whatever suggestion are given on http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=56991
with no help.
Also, I have noticed it was mention to change the database to utf8. The moodle 1.3.3 version is not showing any such option to change database to utf8, please let me know if it is there.
I need to retain all the data from the previous version into the new version. While reading the steps to upgrade in the above mentioned links, I haven't found a clear description of when and what to copy from old moodle folder and at what stage (before upgrading or after). It was mentioned that these folders need to be copied - theme, lang (if custom modules are installed, and I don't know if there are any custom modules or now, how can I find out that?) and data(moodledata is named as data in my installation and it resides inside moodle folder).
I will really appreciate if you can help me as soon as possible. Also, the live site can't be kept down for so long as the clients generate revenue through this site. Is it worth setting the test site with same code and database and experiment with that first?)
Thank you very much in advance
