While looking at this did you ever come across away to have ewiki ignore square and curly braces?
I am trying to get ewiki to display java sketchpad applets, and it appears that htmlarea is stripping applet param statements that have square or curly braces.....
I thought code might work but like nowiki this tag is just stripped, even though it appears in ALLOWED in weblib.php.
