Stats affecting server

Moodle 1.7.1

I turned on stats for a moodle site on our leased server (LAMP) and within a few hours started getting error messages from the server of the format

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
This is cPanel cpuwatch on *****.net!
While processing, the cpu has been
maxed out for more than a 6 hour period.  The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of
this email is
13:00:21 up 451 days, 20:38,  0 users,  load average: 3.75, 3.53, 3.47
You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take
steps to lower the load.  If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit
/var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run
/usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes).

I "turned off" stats on the site but we're still getting these messages. It seems unlikely that the 2 events are unconnected (I've also turned off stat collection for the server in general and we're still getting these messages)

Is it possible that the stats collection on Moodle is actually still running? How can I check & if so how do I kill it?

All suggestions, comments gratefully received.

For the benefit of any one else who has this problem I resolved it by restarting MySQL . Why this worked I know not, but it did.

Obviously something has crashed.

It was MySQL then. You should investigate the state of the database using some diagnostic tool.
