I have read through the documentation/ forums and it might be there but I haven't been able to find it. How do you make a particular lesson mandatory to take before being able to advance to the next lesson? Thanks in advance.

There are various workarounds but if it is the "lesson module" you are talking about then there are dependency settings when you create the Lesson that enable you to do this. If you mean other resources/activities (and are using the term lesson more generally) then the terms you need to search for in the documentation are "Activity Locking" (for 1.9) and Conditional Activities (in 2.0)
