Grade Calculation - Help!

Hi!

I'm extremely new to Moodle and am setting up my first page. I'm struggling with the grade calculation and hope someone can offer some help. The version I am using is 1.9.7.

What I am trying to do is set up 4 assignments. Based on the students results, they may not need to do all 4 assignments but I would like a 'running' total to be recorded and to do that I know I need to tick the 'Aggregate only non-empty grades' box.

I have set up my own scale with two options and I know that scores them as 1 and 2. I would like them to be recorded as 0 and 1.

I know if I do the grade calculation as =SUM(a, b, c, d) it gives me a running total but the scores are still 1 and 2.

I know if I do the grade calculation as =SUM(a-1, b-1, c-1, d-1) it changes the scores to 0 and 1 but it won't give me a total if there are any ungraded assignments.

Is it possible to have a running total ignoring ungraded assignments but recording the scores as 0 and 1? If so, what calculation should I use?

Many thanks for you help!

I'd:
  1. set up the four assignments without a scale, maximum grade = 1
  2. set the aggregation method as "Sum of grades"
  3. throw the calculation under a bus
