Setup for multiple teachers, same exact course

Setup for multiple teachers, same exact course

Hi All,

I and two other teachers will be teaching the same course in chemistry at a high school with all assignments exactly the same. We are going to use Moodle as a supplement not as a full course. Now, I could set up Moodle with three separate courses for each teacher or one course and all three teachers and their students use the one course. The latter seems to be the right way to go unless there is an easy way to copy one lesson, exercise, etc between each course.

What would be the best way? If there was one course could we track students by hour and by teacher?

Thanks for any advice,

Jeff

I think one course with each period of students in a different group. Then you can keep most assignments/activities as separate groups and teachers can view just their students by using the dropdown group selector on the gradebook. The advantage is that sometimes you might have a forum or a test review chat or a glossary or a wiki that allows all students to discuss together and benefit from a larger learning community than the traditional 30 students in their period.

Hi Jeff,

Like Colin says, you can use groups if you put the students and teachers into one course but want flexibility for the students in each class to work with the other classes or separately. Also check out groupings if you want the three classes to have any resources or activities that are only for that class to use.
Information about using groups is in Moodle docs - http://docs.moodle.org/en/Groups

If you want to reuse content from one course in another course, then you can use the import options in the course administration block to copy resources and activities from one course to another.
Information about using import is in Moodle docs - http://docs.moodle.org/en/Import_course_data

What do you mean by tracking students by hour and by teacher?
You can put teachers into groups with the students. Teachers can participate in activities like forums and wikis with their groups.
You can view reports from the course administration block. You can read about Reports in Moodle docs - http://docs.moodle.org/en/Reports
Please further expand your question if these don't help you.

Colin and Tabitha,

Thanks for your input.

I think I am going to have each hour assigned to a group that ends with a teacher's initials. I am familiar with groups and have uploaded class lists with a group being the class hour they are in. I will just have a teacher's initial now.

I like the idea about larger group efforts such as wikis.

When I was looking the the group link, I was led to the the groupings link: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Groupings. Has anyone tried this? I think I could assign those particular groups of one teacher to that teacher's group. Not sure what it would achieve though.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I use groupings quite extensively and really like them. Using groupings will allow you and your colleagues to assign activities to a specific period of students and the other periods won't see the assigned activity at all. I believe at some point you will appreciate this ability. Check it out.
