Courses and course formats

To what extent are students able to choose how they view a page?  I would see some utility in a course format that allows students to move blocks around according to how they use the page.

Is there any possibility for a student page where a learner could see items from multiple courses together... a "My Calendar" view?

I'm sure there are coding concerns here that I can't even imagine ... but since Moodle is ostensibly a learner-centered and social-constructivist tool, I'd like to ask if some mechanism for more student control of the environment is out there on the horizon.
