Hi Carol, I just got the same error for 1 student in a class of 25. Don't see it for any other students.
I think I am going to try and remove all evidence of that assignment ever being submitted by the student. To do so, I'll need to update the database AND remove file from moodledata directory. Then re-submit the file as the student and see if it clears the error.
If that doesn't work, um...Turn editing on and manually update the grade in the gradebook?
