You do not have the permission to view dicussions in this forum

Hello all,

First, please forgive me... I'm new here.

I've logged in as the teacher of the class and I create a forum. Once this is complete, I go back to the main course page and click on the forum and I get the message that "You do not have the permission to view discussion in this forum". The teacher has the "Teacher" role for the class and the "Teacher Role" as Allow set to the viewdiscussion role. Student logons produce the same error. I can see it as administrator.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like it is happening for the forum on the front site page? This may be related to the front page role of your site via Site ► Administration ► Front Page ► Front Page settings.

I suggest you change it to "Authenticated Users"

The front page setting was set to none. Changing it to Authenticated Users did not help. I then tried all of the other options including Guest and Administrator and that did not help either.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Dan
Is it possible for you to turn on debugging and advise us what the error message output is? This might be tricky on a production site but if you can access the error logs on the server you won't need to display the debugging on the screen.

I wonder if this forum has group mode or grouping on? The Teacher role shouldn't have difficulty even if group mode is on because they have the 'access all groups' permission by default. It may be possible that the forum belongs to a grouping which the teacher does not belong to and has the 'avaialble for this grouping only 'checkbox ticked - although again, Teachers shouldn't have difficulty accessing an activity if not in the group because of the above permission.

As Admin you have the ability to do anything which may explain why you as Admin can see it...

I decided to try reinstalling moodle and I can now access the pages. I don't know why I was getting permission errors. This time I am trying to document everything I change from the default.

I know this thread is old now but I have just had the same problem and it turned out to be the fact that a batch of students had been enrolled on the course but did not have a role, by simply adding the student role to them they could all access the News Forum fine.

Just need to work why or how the students had been enrolled without a role.

I've noticed with some versions of Moodle, some older versions, occasionally, when I have gone to Course administration>Users>Enrolled users to manually enrol a bunch of students, I have accidentally enrolled them with the role "None" instead of the role "student" because that is what came up as default and I wasn't paying enough attention to alter it.
