I'm not sure about a way to provide a checkbox however I can tell you about the 'Grade to pass' setting for a grade item.
If you set a grade item to have a 'grade to pass' = 50 and a student receives <50 the cell is highlighted red, indicating to the teacher they have not reached the target. I know the student can't see the highlight, so I'm not sure if parents will be able to..
