Can you provide me the link, I cannot seem to find it.
I have searched the forums and there seems to be alot about this, but I am not for sure. Is there a way to do the essay now in Moodle? I have upgrade to the 1.4xxx version (not sure if that is correct) and have downloaded the new lesson mod, and from what it seems, I would use short answer and possibly wild cards - but is there another way to do it, a way to have to read the answer before grading it?
Has there been a true "essay" answer been created yet?
Hi John, if you downloaded and installed lesson_cdc from CVS/contrib, just create a new lesson, set your settings how you want them, go to the first screen, and click the 'add question' link. On the add question screen, click essay question.
When your students have answered the essay(s), go back to the lesson as a teacher. You'll see a 'grade essay questions' link. Click it, grade the questions, comment if you want to, save changes, and the grades will be updated. Click the 'email feedback' link, and the grade and the comments will be emailed to your students.
For quiz, download the quiz essay class from CVS/contrib and follow the readme for installation. When your students have taken the quiz, go to the review screen for each student, grade their essays, comment, and click save, then continue. Its a little more complicated for quiz as we didn't want to change the core files much, but Henrik is working on adding our code in to the main quiz code, which should make grading a bit more straightforward.
Right now you have to keep track of which student's you've graded in quiz yourself, while in lesson you get all the grading links for a lesson on one screen, and they change color when graded.
Thanks for your quick reply. Silly question, is the CVS contrib directory the same as the mod download area?
Also, is the information you're talking about for thge 1.4 version.
Read down to where it talks about getting to contrib with an anonymous password.
There is all sorts of good stuff in there.
We haven't tested yet with 1.4.3, but everything should work, it does fine with 1.4.2.
I did what you stated, got the lesson_cdc and installed it. Did a test and ran a lesson with essay question, gave the question page a title and a description, and then tested it. Ran 3 questions, and each time I entered an answer (maybe 1 - 3 words) and hit "submit" - it stated that my answer was incorrect.
Hi John, try setting 'show review button' to no. The two features don't really work together.
When you get a set of settings you like, you can save them as defaults for that course, by setting " Use this lesson's settings as defaults" to "yes" before you save changes.
Don't forget, Moodle has always had an excellent essay module==called the Journal Module. I have used it for many years. I assume you want essay questions embedded within multiple choice and other type questions.
