Teaching with Moodle

why don't you opt for Mahara as a separate application where the students have their own eportfolios witf files and blogs and views. Mahara is closely connected to moodle and you can hav a single-sign-on with mahara. You will have a tool that allows you and your students to work closely with moode and mahara and in moodle 2.0 you can also share files between the 2 systems. Have a lokk at mahara.org , you can even try out mahara and have your own account. And: the developers of mahara are closely connected to the developers of moodle and all know each other..
