I just tried installing a module (certificates) by FTP'ing the files to the mod subdirectory.
When I went back into the site administration and clicked on notifications to "install" the module, I get a blank/white screen with a "URL" pointing to http://[sitename]/moodle/admin/index.php
Has the index.php file become corrupted . . . or what??
