In my position as a consulting instructional designer, my new client organization are contemplating contracting a local firm to customize Moodle. Although I don't know all the details of the customization, I do know that my clients are looking for five, specific reports, one more than the vendor's "standard" offering of four reports. I don't know the proposed fee, either, but I do know that this particular vendor is known for very high fees during/because of lengthy, over-manned development cycles. My clients are new to eLearning, but are keen to open this new chapter - perhaps too keen, and susceptible to expert sales pitches. By the way, my client is a small government agency, not in the education field.
Granted also that I don't know Moodle, I do have experience with various LMS/LCMS systems. I'm able to customize templates, reports, etc. You can see where I'm going with this...
I don't want to roil the waters too much, as the newest contributor to my client's efforts, but I do want to protect their investments, some of which might eventually accrue to me, speaking honestly.
Therefore, admittedly answering only theoretically, what are typical charges for Moodle customization, and indeed, how much customization - generally speaking - is worthy of a vendor contract?
Secondly, this particular vendor is not listed as one of the four U.S. Moodle Partners - how important is that?
First post, thanks for your consideration.
