Be brave, it's only some additional lines of CSS
CSS FAQ and Themes FAQ are good starting points for learning more about CSS and theming. There you will also find instructions where to put your customized CSS.
And for testing purposes without changing any of your Moodle files permanently try Firebug and/or Stylish.
