Hi!
The purpose of the Presentation Activity Module for Moodle is to create presentation activities based on rich media such as streaming video, audio and pictures.
The rich media elements are combined into presentation chapters according to a layout. The navigation feature lets the user play through the chapters automatically or choose a specific chapter.
Presentation chapters are created by grouping media elements according to six layout templates. There are 3 basic layout templates, by mirroring them in the vertical plane we obtain a total of 6.
With Moodle Presentation it's possible to stream your own movies from within a Moodle course using php-streaming. To make that possible you must install Yamdi.
Yamdi stands for Yet Another MetaData Injector and is a metadata injector for Flash Video (FLV) files. It adds the onMetaData event to your FLV files. Since installing Yamdi might not be an alternative for everybody, metadata injection can also be done manually with Buraks FLV MetaData Injector, get it from:

Creating presentations can be a time consuming process, sometimes presentations can be shared among different courses. To facilitate the creation and sharing process there is an option to export/import presentations as zipped xml files.

There are no public examples yet, at least not made by us. We'll try to fix a demo course exemplifying activities created with presenter. Technically it's
easy to make presenter work independently of Moodle, this requires some coding to be done.

OK; I'll be interested to see that. I am looking for alternatives, particularly for longer format (more than 10 minutes...up to 90 minutes even).
But even if longer formats are not possible I like this deconstructed flexible approach; more like the promise of SMIL.
I'll be watching this space and if it makes sense for me, I'll be trying it out with my technical support, initially in Moodle.

You can have movies that are 90 minutes or longer if you upload them in Flash Video format into your Moodle course. You are not dependent of YouTube in that case. If you have really long movies and choose to distribute them from your Moodle server you can split them into smaller pieces by entering a start and stop value.

Personaly, if I could insert this PPT in the SWF format (instead of an image) it would be great. 
I was trying the Presenter a bit and I see that it's quite a lot of work to set the times for each slide separatelly... Making 70 chapters for 70 slides presentation, for example... I wondered if there was a way to import video and, for example, PPT and see them in parallel and asign durations for each slide...? Somehow it would be more direct and inmediate.. But I don't know whether it's too complicated to do domething like that... (I'm just a user)....
We'll I'll keep exploring and might have some more (very basic!) questions...

I am using a share hosting for my moodle site, but I can't install either metadata injector in their host. I am not allowed to do so.
Is it possible to use the presenter module without the metadata injector on the host? I am thinking about if I can run flvmdi on my local computer to prepare the flv files first, and then, upload the flv file to the host to use.
Is it possible to have multiple classrooms using the same flv file, and each classroom could start playing the video file at a certain point?
For example,
Class room A have 5 students started at 12:00 pm, and each one of them are watching video1.flv starting at the begining.
Class room B have 3 students started at 12:05 pm, and each one of them are watching video1.flv starting at the begining.
My goal is that in each of the classroom, the students are watching the same content.

I am new to moodle, but what I am trying to accomplish is that to allow the students create study group rooms (or classrooms) dynamically. When they create a study group room, they can pick a lesson, and so, they will have a few slides and a video from the lesson. All the students participating in the study group would be watching the same slide and video at the same pace. The student would have a chatroom to chat with one another.
It is also possible that some other students are forming another study group, and they select the same lesson, and so, the slide and the video will be shown according to this study group's pace.
When they are done with the study session, the study group room would be removed.
The concept of th slides and video is that we can visualize there is a big screen TV in the study room. This big screen TV will first show a few slides, the students would have to click on next to see the next slide. When the slides are done, the TV will show a video about the lesson, after the video there is a few more slides.
I am planning to modify the presenter to accomplish the task, but I am not exactlly sure how to do it, yet.

Yamdi runs in Ubuntu also, you can install it with Synaptic Package Manager, at least on Ubuntu 9.10-10.04
Run yamdi locally and upload the flv files to Moodle.

Im currently working on a presentation using your module. The presentation is a 42 minute flv file with slides imbedded into it.
I want to devide the video into 20 Chapters, so i created 3 chapters to test it, I place the start and end values of the secion into the chapter ie, (00:00:00)and (00:00:30) as well as the next chapter ie.should then start at (00:00:31)
Im not sure if i under stand the capabilities of presenter can it do this?

There should be arrows to move the chapters up and down. Somehow they are missing in the current version of Presenter. I'll report it in the tracker and we should have a new version in a few days.

I Think this is ehy presenter cuts off random sections (between 2 to 8 seconds from both the beginning and end)

That / in the file name may be your problem.
Changed media/7essentials_1overview_lowres.flv to
(Took out the _ symbols)

The / is a reserved character it looks like a path to file. The underscores php uses to replace - in file names. Loose the slash /

Hi, just want to say this is a really great mod. I'm mostly using them for multiple shorter vids on the same page; saves the clicks back and forth.
My question is whether there's a way to fast forward the video while watching; much like youtube e.g. say I want to skip to the 2 min point. I noticed the vids in your demo site can do that; not sure what I'm doing wrong or I missed a setting somewhere. My vids have to load entirely before I could jump to another time. Thanks.

In order to make PHP "streaming" work you need to inject your .flv files with metadata.
This can be done automatically on the server if you install and configure yamdi or by injecting the metadata manually with yamdi (Windows, Linux).
You can also use FLV Metadata Injector from Buraks. Get it from:

the exact path to the command-line metadata injector you want to use to inject metadata in the flv files you might use in presenters. E.g. /home/server/yamdi1.4/yamdi

Is there a way to request new features for this module?
It has great functionality and it allows you to divide your long presentation into smaller piceses so that users don`t have to download full presentation to begin to watch it like in case with powerpoint.
But there is one thing I would like to request. I would like to create presentations with slides and notes only but without video or audio commentary. Is that possible or it has to be programmed.

It's not possible by default, it has to be developed. A workaround would be to upload a mp3 file that plays "silence"
What's the use case for this? How do you advance between slides?manually??

I am using Moodle 1.9.4 on Linux and Firefox for our browser. The effect is that the panes are sized incorrectly. Incidently, on IE, the mp3 doesn't play. I haven't tried using video, yet.
Being only a user, and not proficient in Linux or php, I really can't decipher these errors. ANy ideas?
I also noticed an error in the editing page:

Would this have anything to do with the troubles I'm having?

We have a working version of Presenter for Moodle 2.0. It works as before except for the automatic metadata injection done with yamdi that's not available due to the changes in file handling in Moodle 2.0.
We'll make the new version public arround 15 May.

Has anyone come across a problem when playing video in Presenter where the flv video stop after 2 minutes and 6 or 7 seconds. The video loads but simply stops playing. I have tried playing the video in Moodle but outside of Presenter and it works fine. The video is about 20 to 25 Mbytes.

Problems like that are usualy relataed to the encoding of the video files. What software are you using to encode your flv files? Are you experiencing the issue with all flv files? or only some of them?

I am trying the 2.0 version. Currently I can't get it to stream FLVs. The settings are all commented out so I can't tell it, where to find yamdi.
Any advise?

So I just tried to use yamdi manually: "yamdi -i infile.flv -o outfile.flv" and then uploaded outfile. Still streaming doesn't work.

Automatic insertion of metadata while uploading video files into Moodle is implemented in the Moodle 2.0 version of Presenter due to the fact that file handling is different from the previous Moodle versions. I've updated the documentation files on that.
Metadata insertion for the Moodle 2.0 version of Presenter has to be done manually.
Usually when streaming does not work after metadata insertion with Yamdi or with Buraks FLV MetaData Injector is a sign that something is wrong with the video file. Try with a different flv file.

I tried different flv files. Firefox stays black and konqueror white. The server is a local sandbox on my 64-bit Linux Laptop with Adobe Flash 11.
BTW: It doesn't seem to be a problem on the client side. Your demos do work.

I need some help making my FLV files stream. I have the latest build of Moodle (2.1.1), but my FLV files that I add as a file resource just continually run the "circle". They never actuially play. This is even on small FLV files.
I think I need to make them stream. I have an Apache server (godaddy) Any ideas?

Hi Great module but I appear to be having a problem with the Presenter window. Regardless of which layout I select, the presenter window opens with two columns: the left hand side is empty with the notes section at the bottom (but containing no text despite there being some inputted into the html area) while the right hand column has the video player on top with the navigation underneath (and image under that if the first two layouts selected). No changes were made to layout properties (width 900 height 500 etc). I'm using moodle version 1.9.11+ Any help much appreciated. Cheers Llywelyn

Hi,
I would guess that your Moodle administrator does not allow uploads greater than 2 Mb. These settings are done at the site and at the course level.

I am the site administrator. I have changed the course settings to upload files with a maximum of 512Mb. Now, the greater files I can upload are of 8 Mb, Presenter does not recognize greater files. It seems there is a restriction of video size that I need to modify in order to use this module.

You solve this by setting the "Notes height (lines)" parameter to something else than 0, it is 0 by default thus no lines are shown.

Could the presented module be used to present for example 10 slides in random order with each slide being displayed 30 secondes? Within each slide there is a picture and some text.

Not for pedagogical senario. I could use it for studies where random data is show to participant and then participant should respond to quizzes about the data.

I am trying to install the latest version of the presenter module on moodle 2.2, but I am not being sucessfull. Is there any version that works with moodle 2.2?
I tried to access the project's github page (https://github.com/netsapiensis/moodle-mod_presenter) and download the 2.0 version stable, but it does not install. Instead, I get a message "Debug info: Missing mandatory en language pack.".
Is there any beta version for moodle 2.2?

I've just had a quick look at the repo and the en language pack is there.
Here are a few possibilities:
1. You didn't rename the folder correctly - it should be [moodledir]/mod/presenter/[all the files] (not [moodledir]/mod/netsapiensis-moodle-mod_presenter-asdasw/[all the files], or something like that, which you will get if you just unzip it without renaming).
2. You didn't include the sub-folders when unzipping / uploading (unlikely, but possible)
3. (Most likely) the permissions are wrong in the subfolders, so Moodle can't read them (check the webserver has permission to read/execute each of the subfolders).

As a try, I gave full permission to all the "presenter" folder content, and still I got the same error.

Hi,
When I write a link to youtube with ssl, 443, https://www.youtube.com insted of http://www.youtube.com it doesn't play. The web is also under ssl, 443. It happens since the change of Firefox policy.
