Hi Sal,
Since you cannot really hide it without hiding the grades inside, one of the solutions that people suggested was:
Go to Categories and Items then click Edit near Course Total (should be set to SWM or WM) and review "Grade Display type" there. Set it to None.

Here is a hack suggested by Bob (I have not tried that).
