Alphabetizing the Glossary

Alphabetizing the Glossary

Hello all,

I've imported a glossary that is alphabetized, however, all of the entries ended up under 'A'. Is there a way to get the A-Z index to work without having to upload the glossary in 26 different chunks?

Any help would be appreciated!

Look at what "Display format" you're using. I'm using the "Simple Dictionary" and it is working just fine to list in alpa order....Sounds as if you may be using a Continous format?

Display format

This setting specifies the way that each entry will be shown within the glossary. The default formats are:

Simple Dictionary:
looks like a conventional dictionary with separate entries. No authors are displayed and attachments are shown as links.
Continuous:
shows the entries one after other without any kind of separation but the editing icons.
Full with Author:
A forum-like display format showing author's data. Attachments are shown as links.
Full without Author:
A forum-like display format that does not show author's data. Attachments are shown as links.
Encyclopedia:
Like 'Full with Author' but attached images are shown inline.
FAQ:
Useful for displaying lists of Frequently Asked Questions. It automatically appends the words QUESTION and ANSWER in the concept and definition respectively.

Here is my setup configuration for the Glossary:

Re: Alphabetizing the Glossary

Thanks for the reply Christopher.

I did have it set up dictionary style, and I even tried a few of the other settings just to see if that would change anything, and regardless of the format,  all 337 entries are under 'A'. So I just have it set to show 'ALL' rather than the A-Z. It kind of sucks, but it's better than nothing.

When I imported the glossary, I used the import2.php mod and uploaded a .txt file with the concept & definitions defined (not xml, just plain text, moodle formatting, not categorized.) It didn't say anything about defining anything else, so I thought maybe that's where I screwed up, I didn't define the alphabet somehow.

Thanks again,
Christine

Hi Chrisine,

entries should be showed under their initial automatically. Can you send (privately, if you want), your glossary to load it in my test server.

Perhaps some strange character is being loaded or something similar...if I'm not wrong, the import2.php loads WebCT glosaries and the concepts must start with the ":" character....

I just noticed that my concepts begin with ": " - a space following the colon. Would that cause the problem? Does WebCT recoginze a space as a character?

Hi Christine,

I've received your glossary. Thanks!

After some tests I think that the couse for your problem is that white space after the colon. Two possible solutions are:
  • Detete such character from your file.
  • Modify import2.php to include this lines:
    $newentry->concept = trim($newentry->concept);
    $newentry->definition = trim($newentry->definition);
    just after line 133. It should delete that whitespaces when loading data from file...

Hope it helps...ciao ຍິ້ມ
