Hi Paula,

Currently Moodle Choices is offering a far greater contribution to our admin functions than our teaching.(remember not to use groups in this function)

1) Elective courses: students are given a list of choices that they can choose from

2) Sign up for a specific activity eg Rosetta Stone, cycle rental - Students self-enrol to a moodle coursepage then click to say 'please sign me up' - we use choices in order to set course limits

3) Choice of degree specialism - students are away on stage, and change their mind frequently, so we set a choices activity with the pathways and instead of emailing us every time they change their minds, they indicate the change on choices, which are left open.

4) as with the inclusion of images, there is no reason why you can't include podcasts or video.

5) we MIGHT run our student union elections online next semester.

Probably not quite what you had in mind, but it all helps to focus our colleagiues minds on the value of teh system,

best

Paul

Thank you very much Paul.

These are great ideas.  I hadn't thought of many uses from this point of view.

I have gotten the images figured out thanks to Mary Cooch's tutoring on html which I am just beginning to learn.  Perhaps I'll have time to experiment with the podcasts. That sounds intriguing.

Mary Cooch's tutoring in html big grinbig grinbig grinbig grin lol - You make it sound like I know what I am talking about!!
I just figured how to put audio (mp3) in as well - you do it like this (I am sure someone clever at coding will come and say it's written all wrong, but it does work !)

I will try that.... as soon as I finish my conference presentation and the district technology plan I am working on.  It's such a cool idea perhaps I will be able to find some time to try it out before the presentation....

The working part is the most important as far as I'm concerned.

I sometimes stumble around in something new for a while before I understand what's going on. That's actually the way I learn best.  I'm always telling kids that making errors is part of the learning...guess I live it quite often.

Thanks again for your help.  I really have learned a lot about Html and how to find my moodle resources from your posts all over the forums.

A simple question to answer, to kick start - the beginning of a lesson.
A question left unanswered from a lesson - that needs an answer. Now home study.
As feedback about a lesson, as assessment for learning.

As they are so fast to set up - they can even be used as a polling tool, although there are other tools out there.

These suggestion are not that 'creative' more practical uses I have used Choice for.

A colleague used them for student voice polling.

Kristian,

Thank you so much.

My computer just died and I have to use the backup computer... I am rebuilding the Powerpoint and your list will go right into it.

Can you tell me more about student voice polling?  I am not sure I understand what that is.

I've used choice as a pre task to get class stats in regard a topic that will come up for discussion (better to get them to do it before class than in class! Even something as simple as "Who has been to another country?" in prep for making groups for class), polling for what they liked in a class, and even for attendance (though I believe there are better 3rd party addons for this...).

I have made some minor changes to the Choice code (only requiring one "choice") so that we in the Business world can use the Choice module for Memo tracking.

Each Memo is a new Choice, the memo is entered, and the choice is "I have read and understand this memo". Then our Managers can track who has or has not read the memo, and follow up with those who have not read them.

Every spring, our school sends 180 students and our fine arts faculty to a 3 or 4 day event. Students invited to participate are enrolled in a Moodle course for the event.

We use the new forum to communicate with students. The forum is open to anyone, so parents can read it, too.

We use the choice module to gather the initial commitment from students to attend, and then later their their bus choices and hotel roommates. In years that the bus rides are long enough, students pre-select boxed meals.

I modified the Choice module to allow me to easily make selections for students who do not respond in a timely manner.

We also use the feedback module to gather student cell phone numbers, a list of events that each student will attend, and t-shirt requests.

I wrote a PHP program to gather all of this info and create an Excel file with all of the info in various arrangements.

Eric, Iver and Brian,

What great ideas!

I did a presentation last week, but have already put in for a new conference to present again. I will add your great ideas in to the new presentation.  I didn't have much in the Choice area at the time. These will help fill out that section.

Thank you,
