As I understand it, calculations in a category or course total will disable any aggregation used.
I would try using the same scheme without the calculation. Sum of grades should calculate up the total points accurately. I discourage our faculty from using calculations because its CPU exhaustive. We also used the CLAMP LAE edition of the gradebook which gets around the problems of categories not updating their maxgrades (which, as I mentioned above, should not be a problem with Sum of Grades).
