Using Moodle as a "classroom" not a "course delivery room"?

Using Moodle as a "classroom" not a "course delivery room"?

Hello. We were recently discussing how we could group students so they would be just with one teacher as a seperate classroom - as some other threads have raised.
This conversation raised a question / suggestion that asked: Could we use Moodle - set up a course - that would act like a classroom in a school. Not just for one course, but as a place where students "attend" and engage in activities that would happen in a normal classroom but not be course specific. You would still have students do their subjects - courses in Moodle - but they would also participate in the activities of their teachers classroom.
There would be a lot of questions / logistics to iron out, but first I wanted to ask this group if anyone has tried this sort of idea out (or something similiar) and if it works. I realize that this idea is still a bit vague. Any thoughts / suggestions / ideas ... would be most welcome.

A bit like this course you mean? smile

The 'social format' might be good as a sort of "home room".
