I assume we are talking about the HotPot module here. If the students cannot exit the activity, then perhaps they need more hints, or the questions are too difficult for them to find the answer. Or maybe you are using Hot Potatoes quizzes like tests? In which case, please view the following tutorial:

The score should always be updated, whether students complete the quiz or not. Maybe you have a error, or your html code is not standards compliant? Could you check that the contents of the html file is valid xhtml:
