have installed Nanogong HTML area application in Moodle 1.9.7. I follow the instructions I found on both Moodle.org and gong.ust.hk, but the the buttons on html editor are disappeared after install. I use the moodle-1.9.5 HTMLarea-hack ( I found it here) for my Moodle. Could anyone tell me why this happened and how to fix the problem? Thanks!

Hi, I've done exactly what Chihuei did: I installed Nanogong HTML area application in Moodle 1.9.7, using the 1.9.5 hack. But not only is the sound button missing from the HTML editor, but I still cannot see messages made by students in the Nanogong activity module when logged in as an administrator; I can only see them as a student.

It would just be wonderful for my students and I if we could get Nanogong working correctly. Can anybody help to solve this problem?

Hi all,

We upgraded from 1.9.5 where NanoGong worked fine to 1.9.7. were it has the problem that it records normally but the link it creates in the HTML editor is an image link instead of a link to the NanoGong recording. To be exact, it creates

<img alt="testing" src="http://openmoodle.tokem.fi/lib/editor/htmlarea/images/ed_sound.gif" width="18" height="18" caption="testing" url="/1/nanogong_files/2/2010-01-11_081618.spx" />

when it should create:

<nanogong caption="testing" url="/1/nanogong_files/2/2010-01-11_081618.spx" />

The first link only creates an image which does not open the NanoGong player. When I change the link manually to the second link, it works after saving, but as soon as I edit the page, it turns into the faulty first link again.

Please, can anybody tell me, which file I should edit and where in order to get NanoGong working properly again. Or if anyone has a complete set of NanoGong files adapted for Moodle version 1.9.7+, I would appreciate it.

Rgrds,
Paul.

Hello to all,

I currently have a working version of the Nanogong html area application in 1.97. I have created a blog post on how to edit the weblib.php file to make it work correctly in 1.97. You can find the post here:

http://orwinconsulting.com/blogs/randy-orwin/making-nanogong-html-editor-icon-work-moodle-193-and-later

I have verified that the applet works in forums and other activities. The post also includes copies of the modified weblib.php for both 1.95 and 1.97.

Good luck!

Hi Eda,

Are you referring to the use of the Nanogong activity or something like a forum discussion using the html edit integration? If you could get me a login to your system so I can see what is going on I would be happy to take a look.

Hi Randy,
You gave me a great idea by writing "something like a forum discussion using the html edit integration?" I always try to add a nanogong activity then add the messages but I have never tried to use forums. Now after I read your message, I tried to use forum and it workssmile I am very very happy and thank you very much for your help. I want to ask an additional question: Can we moderate the messages in forums? I mean, after the teacher approve the messages, students can listen messages. Is it possible?

Hi Eda,

If you are trying to add teacher recorded audio in a Nanogong Activity, the only place you can provided recorded feedback is in the description of the activity via the html edit integration or in a comment section once a student has submitted a response. The default permissions on Nanogong don't allow teachers to actually use the Nanogong applet in a Nanogong activity. This is why I like the html editor integration so much is that it provides the ability to add audio to any page that has the html editor.

Unfortunately there is no way to moderate a forum discussion in such a way as to approve each post before it is readable by the students. The idea behind a forum is to get a free flowing discussion about a particular topic. If each post has to be moderated you lose the intent of the forum. In my Moodle courses I just have the expectation that everyone will abide by the rules in a forum and let them post at will. If someone gets out of line I deal with them on an individual level.

If you really do want to moderate posts before students can view/listen to them you could take a look at the glossary and database module which both allow all entries to be moderated by the teacher.

I hope this helpssmile

Hello Harshit,

Before really giving a good answer we need to know what kind of operating system your Moodle is running on and what kind of database.

In the mean time it almost sounds like the files aren't actually in the folder so first I would verify that all of the files are in the folder. Once you have done that you need to verify that the permissions are correct on the files and folders in the Moodle/mod folder. On my Linux box my folders are set with 755 permissions and the files in the Nanogong folder are set with 644. Give these permissions a shot, assuming that you are on a Linux server and see if they make any difference.

Good luck!

Thank you Randy,

I am running it from Windows Server 2008 OS with XAMPP, for some reasons it says 'read only' in moodle directory and even if i want to change itself gets back to read only

Hi,

I am using Moodle 1.9.10 and installed Nanogong: The NanoGong Activity Module for Recent Versions of Moodle before Moodle 2.

The recorder works in student view but is not there in teacher view.  I understand that I need to also download the HTML Editor. Is this the HTMLarea patch? The NanoGong HTMLArea Patch Files for Moodle 1.9.10 Zip File Size: 282KB

The files look like a duplication what I have already downloaded.
Also, if I extract these files to the server, I am not sure if I need to create a separate HTMLarea folder with these files under the mod/nanogong folder
should the path be: moodle/mod/nanogong/htmlarea ?
Do I also need to download the filter files? Again, what would the path for those be?
Thank you,
Cisca

Re: Nanogong HTML area application in Moodle 1.9.7

Hi Glenys,

Thanks for the helpful reply and instructions. I am a little confused. I am uploading files to a server where my Moodle site is hosted. I put all the files into moodle/mod/nanogong.  (I created a nanogong folder to upload all the files: activity module and htmlarea package.  There was already a moodle/filter folder so I put the filter items there.)

I think the html area package is my problem. I created a folder for nanogong in the moodle/mod folder and uploaded the Nanogong activity module. Within the NanoGong activity module there is already an htmlarea folder. That is where I put the html area patch which overwrote the other htmlarea files in the nanogong activity folder. This is the path:

public_html/Moodle/mod/nanogong/lib/editor/htmlarea

Did I put this in the right place?  Your example looks like the htmlarea patch is not in the mod folder.

Thanks. Hope this makes sense to you.  I like your instructions.

Cisca

from your instructions:

Important ! Do not remove the lang and lib files that already exist - they contain files that do not
exist in the nanogong-htmlarea-4.1-moodle-1.9.11plus.zip file.
Add the lang and lib folders you found in nanogong-htmlarea-4.1-moodle-1.9.11plus.zip to the moodle folder. There are already lang and lib folders in the moodle folder and I cannot create new ones there. I put the htmlarea files in the lang and lib folders that were part of the activity module files.
On Windows 7 will be asked if you want to replace certain files - agree to it.

Hi Cisca,

I'm sorry but I can't add to the tutorials I've already written. I wrote them some months ago and haven't used NanoGong since. I just don't remember now all the ins and outs - just that it was complex which was why I needed to write it all down. People have written that my tutorials worked for them.

"Add the lang and lib folders you found in nanogong-htmlarea-4.1-moodle-1.9.11plus.zip to the moodle folder. There are already lang and lib folders in the moodle folder and I cannot create new ones there. I put the htmlarea files in the lang and lib folders that were part of the activity module files" I'm not 100% sure, but I think the NanoGong lang and lib folders will replace the orginal ones. Just make a copy of the original folders before you try so can put them back if something weird happens

Hope the help you've been getting on the nanogong installation discussion does the trick.

Cheers,

Glenys

Hi just a suggestion,

Would this be useful?

Assignment Type: Nanogong Assignment Type

Type: Assignment Type
Requires: Moodle 1.9
Status: Contributed
Maintainer(s): Dan Poltawski (Lancaster University Network Services Ltd)
The nanogong voice recording java app as an assignment type. Please note that in Moodle 2.0 and beyond this is probably best achieved by using the nanogong repository plugin and upload file type.

Hello Randy,

A belated thanks for your response, but unfortunately your version of weblib.php for Moodle 1.9.7 does not solve my problem. I have not compared the files, but if your version of weblib.php only adds the <nanogong> tag, it is no different from the one I already had.

We run Moodle on Red Hat Linux. NanoGong works fine in version 1.9.5+, but in version 1.9.7 the link to the saved recording created by the NanoGong applet is different and it does not work. As the NanoGong files are the same, one or more of the Moodle files is responsible for changing the link. I need to know which file/code is the culprit and how I can hack it without damaging my Moodle installation.

Rgrds,
Paul.

Hi David,

I am running Nanogong 4.0 with Moodle 1.9.8.

I was really keen on the HTML editor integration and forums. The installation went smoothly and when creating a forum I can record the audio message. But once I save the settings and create the forum, I cannot see the audio file for playback. The little yellow icon is missing. The same problem occus in the forum posts. The HTML editor works fine but can't listen to them in the posts since they are missing.

Any idea as to why this might be happening? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Yogi

Hi Yogesh,

I faced the same problem with Moodle 1.9.8 and it was solved. No code edit was needed.

Please make sure that Nanogong's filter is installed and active in the filters block. smile

Re: Nanogong HTML area application in Moodle 1.9.7

Hi Anis,

The filter has been enabled under the Administration menu for our Moodle site. The Nanogong recordings do work as an activity and in various other areas of the Moodle site where the HTML editor is used.

The only location in our courses where it does not work is the 'Forums Activity'. When I try to use the nanogong recorder when posting to a forum or creating a forum, the recorder shows up fine and I can make the recording. But then once I save it and try to view it as a "Student", I can't see any recording visible in the postings. Any help here would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Yogi
