Please help, we have urged a number of schools to upgrade to Moodle 1.9.6 and the gradebook doesn't seem to work!

We recently upgraded to Moodle 1.9.6 from 1.8.3 and noticed the change in the gradebook, but what I've only just realised is that the actual grades only appear in the gradebook when in editing mode, otherwise the cells are empty.
Please help, we have urged a number of schools to upgrade to Moodle 1.9.6 and the gradebook doesn't seem to work!
